For lighting designing, there are usually two options of light beams to choose when it comes to choose the right luminaire for a specific lighting project, symmetrical beam or asymmetrical beam. They are two different principles of lighting the work place.

Symmetrical beam distributes light evenly in all directions. It is recommended for large area general lighting and for visual tasks. By asymmetrical lighting, usually asymmetric reflector or lens are used to direct the light sideways from the shade across the work area. Asymmetrical luminaires are ideal for concentrating the light beam in one direction.

Each has its advantages for a certain application. Key factor of choosing asymmetrical or symmetrical beam lies in the lamp installation position and other lighting conditions.

Usually most tunnel lights, street lights are of asymmetrical lighting distribution. Floodlights have both asymmetrical and symmetrical beams. While some other architectural lighting fixtures like in-ground lights and wall washer have more symmetrical than asymmetrical beams.

Why we need asymmetrical floodlights?

Taking floodlights for example, asymmetrical type has good advantages in theater and sports stadium lighting where glare control is essential. By adopting asymmetrical floodlights, there will be no direct eye contact with the LED light source, and they will reduce sharp shadows., this means no direct strong uncomfortable feeling by the glare for audience and athletes. Asymmetrical sports floodlights facilitate the transition from dark to light spaces in work places, with very uniform and sufficient light distribution over the work area. There won’t be shade intruding the work area.

Therefore, for gym lighting, stadium lighting, theater lighting, and car park lighting etc., asymmetrical floodlights will be powerful in application.
